The Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria (STAV) is delighted to announce the appointment of Diana Amato as its new Executive Director, commencing on 5 January 2026. This follows the resignation of STAV’s current Executive Director, Scott Bumpstead, who will take up a role as the CEO of Myotherapy Australia.
Diana brings to STAV over 30 years of leadership across health, policy, youth affairs, and community development. Her extensive experience spans international, national, and local contexts, working with government and non-profit sectors to deliver systemic change.
Diana’s expertise in driving growth, implementing change management, and fostering high-performing teams will be instrumental in advancing STAV’s mission to champion science education in Victoria.
Diana has held senior roles with peak bodies including the Centre for Multicultural Youth and the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition, where she led strategic advocacy, business development, and program design, implementation, and evaluation. She is recognised for securing government funding to expand school-based programs across Victoria and for successfully leading their implementation to empower educators and prevent racism in schools.
Known for her excellent stakeholder management and collaborative leadership, Diana builds strong partnerships to achieve measurable impact. Passionate about creating change that supports communities, she combines evidence-based practice with a values-driven approach. Thinking herself “not very sciency”, she was recently reminded by a STAV Life member that her three years of undergraduate psychology is, in fact, a science education—a reflection of her lifelong curiosity and commitment to learning. Diana looks forward to working with members and partners to strengthen STAV’s influence and continue to support science teachers across Victoria.
Alexandra Abela, President of STAV, welcomed Diana’s appointment, stating, “On behalf of STAV Council, I am delighted to welcome Diana to the role of Executive Director. Her dynamic leadership style, strategic vision, and passion for education and social justice align perfectly with our mission to promote excellence in and equity of access to quality science education. We are certain that Diana’s appointment will enhance STAV’s ability to support educators, advocate for the profession, and drive the growth of science education in Victoria.”
Established in 1943, STAV continues to serve as a leading voice for science educators, providing professional development, advocacy, and resources that empower educators and elevate the role of science in schools and the community.
