National Science Week 2024 is here!
Celebrate National Science Week from 10-18 August 2024 with your students and fellow educators. This year, National Science Week, with the theme “Species Survival More than just Sustainability”, is coming with many interactive and educational events across Victoria.
Here is a list of activities and events that you can join. Don’t miss out, as some of the events are free!
1. Hacking the Anthropocene – Climate stories between art and science
From Saturday, 10 August 2024.
Science Gallery Melbourne.

Join educators Kathryn Coleman and Sarah Healy, along with Science Gallery Melbourne Mediators, to participate in a workshop where student can explore connection to art, science, and climate change. Participants will have the opportunity to interact and share thoughts and concerns about the current significant human impact on the Earth (the Anthropocene). This workshop, approved by the University of Melbourne ethics committee, is open to individuals aged 14-28.

2. Science on Show

Melbourne Museum.
Join Melbourne Museum scientists who specialise in ancient fossils and underwater marvels. Discover rare collections, learn about endangered species, and create something special to take home.
As part of National Science Week, Science on Show showcases some of the rarest and most fascinating species displayed at Melbourne Museum.
Museums Victoria Research Institute scientists—including experts in palaeontology, marine biology, herpetology, birds and mammals, entomology, live exhibits, and mineralogy—will share insightful stories linked to the Museum’s unique collections. Find out more about the event here.
3. Careers in STEM Webinar

This National Science Week, Melbourne Water provides an opportunity to explore the connections between science, technology, engineering, and math with the management and protection of waterways, wastewater treatment, and even storytelling. The event will highlight various careers in science and innovation and discuss the different pathways to enter these fields.

4. Explore Forensic Science at VIFM’s National Science Week Event

6. Survive and Thrive: A Diverse Program of Open Events for Families and Communities Across Victoria
Survive and Thrive is a series of community-focused events presented in collaboration between Museums Victoria, Royal Botanical Gardens Victoria, Zoos Victoria, Neighbourhood Houses Victoria, Public Libraries Victoria and the Royal Society of Victoria for National Science Week, produced by the Inspiring Victoria program.
This open program across the State of Victoria aims to engage people of all ages with the world of scientific knowledge while emphasising fun and discovery. The program highlights the interconnectedness of life, showcasing collective and community action from major public institutions to grassroots knowledge networks across Victoria. It encourages the use of reliable knowledge to help species, ecosystems, and people survive and thrive into the future.
