The future of science in Australia begins with great science teaching

  • April 16, 2026

Kim Carr AM’s reflections at a recent event hosted by The Royal Society of Victoria on the future of science in Australia reinforced just how critical stronger investment in research and development is to our nation’s success.

Kim highlighted The Ambitious Australia – Strategic Examination of R&D report and the need for bold investment in research, development and innovation, stronger national coordination, workforce capability, and a pipeline of talent to drive Australia’s future prosperity.

What is certain is that science teachers play a critical role in shaping Australia’s future. Every researcher, innovator, engineer and problem-solver starts with a teacher who sparks curiosity, passion, and builds confidence in science.

That is why STAV believes investing in the development of science teachers matters. When we support educators with the knowledge, skills and resources to thrive, we strengthen the pipeline of future talent our nation depends on.

If Australia is serious about its future in science, we must also be serious about supporting the teachers who make that future possible.
