Evidence in Practice: For Teaching Science with Impact

The Evidence in Practice professional learning series is designed for science teachers who want research-informed strategies to strengthen explicit instruction and boost student understanding and retention. 

You can attend in person as a full-day workshop or participate online across two half-day sessions.

Each program provides practical approaches that translate directly into classroom practice. Choose the program that best aligns with your needs and priorities. 

All programs will start by exploring: 

  • key ingredients of explicit teaching
  • evidence-informed resources to support science teaching practice
  • curriculum-aligned planning to support teaching with Victorian Curriculum 2.0 Science.

 

Workshop 1:
Memory, scaffolding and worked examples

We will focus on:

  • implications models of memory and cognitive load for teaching and learning
  • scaffolding learning in science and the gradual release of responsibility
  • effective strategies for using worked examples in science
Workshop 2:
Addressing misconceptions, scientific vocabulary and scaffolding discussion

We will focus on:

  • developing scientific vocabulary
  • effective approaches for uncovering and addressing student misconceptions
  • keys to scaffolding productive student discussion
Program 3:
Effective modelling, feedback and student self-reflection

We will focus on:

  • effective approaches for modelling knowledge and skills for students in science
  • keys for structured progress monitoring and feedback that moves learning forward
  • strategies for supporting effective student self-reflection

This professional learning is evidence-informed and is aligned with school system priorities including the implementation of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0, Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Flourishing Learners and Sandhurst Diocese Magnify. 

Supported by the Department of Education Strategic Partnerships Program and delivered by the Science Teachers Association of Victoria.

Discounted registration is available to government schools, disadvantaged schools (low ICSEA) and STAV members.
